Free! 4th of July Community Concert 2024
The Newport community celebrated Independence Day this year with the annual Free Fourth of July concert at Newport Middle School. And joining the event were some very special guests!
Music Director Adam Flatt conducted the Newport Symphony Orchestra of 60 musicians, — including fife and drum! -- and over 500 attended. Joining the festivities were Governor Tina Kotek and First Lady Aimee Kotek Wilson. The Governor shared heartfelt and thoughtful words of welcome to the attendees, “The First Lady and I are so happy to be here and celebrate Independence Day with you. It’s a day that we as Americans celebrate, think about what we have accomplished and celebrate our freedom, and I would just urge each and every one of you to take advantage of this day to really love your community. Think about your neighbors, love your community, love your country.” Later in the program, Governor Kotek announced the names of the service branches during the armed forces tribute.
Local scouts opened the event by presenting the colors and the crowd rose for the playing of the National Anthem. Audience members then joined in singing the state anthem "Oregon My Oregon" Attendees were treated to a range of fun and festive music with medleys from the Sound of Music, James Bond, and the Beatles. Audience members were invited to sing along to a Patriotic Medley arranged by local composer and music arranger Dave Robertson. To honor local fishermen and the perils they face at sea, the orchestra performed "On the Open Sea" by Jeff Rona. Maestro Flatt and Governor Kotek then presented the Armed Forces Salute to recognize audience members who are serving or have served in the armed forces. The orchestra concluded with Liberty Fanfare by John Williams, followed by the fan favorite encore of Stars and Stripes Forever, thrilling the audience.
